Over the Thanksgiving break I talked to my mom about her
most important information technology and she thinks that the iPhone has had
the most impact on her work. My mom runs a stationary business for events, such
as Weddings and Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, and is in contact with her customers all day,
everyday. When she first got the iPhone, she had a lot of difficulties making
the transformation from an ordinary flip phone to a phone with so many
capabilities. She found it very difficult to make the change even though she is
usually good with other technologies. We both agreed that her biggest
difficulty came from the size of the phone. It took awhile for her to get
adjusted to having the Internet and email on a phone compared to a huge
computer screen. Although I originally thought that switching to the iPhone
would help her with regards to her business, she thought it made it more
difficult. She explained that having a phone with email on it put more pressure
on her because her customers began to expect automatic responses from emails,
even into the night. On the contrary, my mom found that the iPhone helped her
with organization because at all times she can find out what her schedule was
like and whether or not she can set up new times to meet with customers. Overall,
she feels that the iPhone has helped her with her work, and I would have to
agree with her.
