Rotella’s article was about a county which purchased tablets
for every student and teacher in 18 of 24 middle schools in the county. The
thesis was that having new technology in classrooms is important but in the
end, it comes down to the teacher’s ability to integrate the technology into
the classroom so that it facilitates learning. He establishes at the end of the
article that technology is a useful tool but the teachers are still the ones
who have the largest effect on the students.

Carlo Rotella is a Professor of English at Boston College.
He is also the Director of American Studies there. He received his B.A. from
Wesleyan University and his PH.D. from Yale. He could relate to the teachers he
spoke with while researching this article because he is also a teacher at the
college level. He also has children who are in middle school.
