For this week’s homework I watched a video on YouTube called
“Using Big Data in the Workplace.” This
video was about an online course that MIT offers to help people learn about
‘big data’. The video is meant to be a
preview to people who are interested in learning about this subject. The video talks about how Vannevar Bush
predicted a machine that is capable of computing information for humans. It compares the machine the size of a desk that
Bush came up with to how nowadays we have a smartphone that has just as much
processing power, while being extremely small in comparison to the Memex Bush
came up with.
Although this video wasn’t the most informing
video about the Memex, it did catch my attention about the class. The class will teach the students about how algorithms
are used in big data and focus on the idea of big data and how it works. It will also go in depth about how sharing
through the Internet and computers is possible.
I think it would be interesting to take this class and learn about big
data because a man was able to predict the era we are currently in over 60
years ago. Technology fascinates me
because the behind the scenes processes are way over my head, so it makes me
wonder if the instructors of this class have any predictions about the future
like Bush had.
