For our assignment this week I chose to watch the video "The Story of the Television" It was made in 1956, and is mainly about the evolution of Television in society and technologically. The video starts off referencing how "The signature to every generation is its skyline." This allows the video to naturally transition to why TV was needed in society. It allowed people to be at home and see skylines all over the world. The video continuously compares the Television to the human eye. The narrator explains how they both have similar goals, and how humans have constantly innovated for both. The video then goes into detail on the inter workings of the television, and how it uses similar processes to the human eye.
This video definitely showed how different televisions were back when they first came out. The quality was very low, and was based on a system of lines being scanned. NBC was the first channel to broadcast, and the TV was first released at the World Fair in 1939. This led to a series of "firsts" being broadcasted. Franklin D. Roosevelt was the first president to be televised, and people were able to see broadcasts of what was going on overseas in England. Television changed the way our society functioned, and allowed people to see around the world just from their couch. The video also mentioned that the creation of the TV created an entire new job industry, which is a point that should not be overlooked, especially since this came right after The Great Depression.
This video has a fair amount of bias toward the television since it was produced by RCA, who still makes televisions to this day. Of course they are going to talk up how great and world changing their product is, especially at a time, in the 1950s, in which color TV was about to be released and they wanted people buying their product. However, it is still very impressive that through everything that has changed with television in the past 80 years, that one company has continued to survive this long.

I thought that was an interesting video. I also watched a video on television, but this one was newer and had a different perspective. I like how they introduced it as a way to see father then ever before as opposed to being somewhere you are not, which is what the 1941 TV film was about. I also liked that it had an interview with the inventors of TV and much time and money was spent making it and improving it. It also showed the advancement in television by going from black and white to color TV. I thought it was a great informational video.
