Google Chromebooks

The information society term I have selected is Chromebook. A Chromebook is a relatively recent term in the computer industry. A Chromebook is laptop computer which runs Google's Chrome OS operating system. These are low end consumer quality laptops designed primarily for web browsing and word processing. Chromebooks were primarily designed to accompany other personal computer, allowing the user access to all their files on Google Drive. The earliest article I found with the term "Chromebook" was in The New York Times. It was published July 8, 2009. This is about two years before any Chromebook computers ever hit the shelves. The earliest use of this term in a scholarly article on ProQuest was on July 9, 2011. The article was "The Lancet Technology: July, 2011" by Niall Boyce. The term was first used in The New York Times describing the development Chrome OS operating system. The use of the word has always meant the same thing because "Chromebook" is the name of a product line. That has never changed. Chromebooks were an innovation in the computer industry because they offered something never really seen before, the ability to buy a computer with only basic functionality for a lower price. This is a computer style which would be sufficient for many college students.
