iPod

The term I chose relating to the modern information society is the iPod. The earliest use I could find about the iPod was in a New York Times article, "Apple Introduces What It Calls an Easier to Use Portable Music Player," by Matt Richtel. This article was published October 24, 2001. MP3 players had already been out, but it was said that the iPod was better. The first one was 4" by just less that 2.5" and 3/4 of an inch thick and stored up to 1,000 songs. It costed $399. The problem faced with the first iPod was that it was only compatible with Macintosh computers. It was estimated that only seven million people owned a Mac computer, while 90% of personal computer uses had a Windows operating system. At the time, it was not yet said whether a Windows-compatible version would be made. Ini response to this concern, Apple's Executive, Steve Jobs said that he hoped the iPod would prompt people to purchase a Mac computer so they could use the iPod. Another article I found via the ProQuest database was one written by Doug Olenik on November 5, 2001. He also talked about the new iPod and it's new features. The main point of his article was the price of the iPod. This new technology was cool and had a lot of potential but not for the price. He thought people would initially buy it, but the price would hamper the sales. As time went on, the iPod became a very popular music device, the one everyone wanted to have. There are many different versions of the iPod such as the iPod Nano and the iPod touch. Today, however almost all smartphones play music so the iPod has somewhat fizzled out.
