Thanksgiving Post

Over my Thanksgiving break I talked to my dad about the different information technologies he uses in his job.  My dad works runs a Merger and Acquisition company that specializes in healthcare, and he said one information technology stood out significantly more from the rest. He said far and away Microsoft Excel is the most important technology in his office. The applications of this program are nearly infinite. It can be used to organize data, calculate transactions, predictions, payouts, and much more. It is also such a universally known program that it is easy to use between multiple companies.

My dad didn't have the luxury of growing up in a society where computers were such a central thing so his transition to learning excel was tough. My dad isn't the most computer literate person, but he can still do many of the formulas provided by excel, he just can't do some of the more technical things. However, he said it doesn't really effect him negatively in the workplace because his specific responsibilities don't call for very intensive Excel use.

The most interesting thing he said during our talk was that before he hires an employee they must pass an Excel test performed by the company. This takes place after their interview. If it is found that they are not proficient in Excel, they will not be hired by the company. I think that statement alone speaks for the importance of Excel in today's society.
